MADISON, Wis. – Coming off two tie contest in a row against conference competition, the Edgewood College men's soccer team faced Benedictine University on Saturday afternoon. Benedictine University held the Eagles offense at bay, only allowing a total of six shots to be taken overall. Despite scoring early in the second half, the Eagles couldn't mount a comeback, falling to Benedictine 4-1.
Benedictine University (7-4, 4-0 NACC) didn't waste any time, as Hayden Van Son took the first shot of the contest six minutes in. In the 12th minute Erik Stammer netted his sixth goal of the season off an assist by Yair Ortega to put Benedictine up 1-0. Stammer would go on to score three total goal in the contest. Just 20 minutes later the combination of Ortega and Stammer would score again, this time coming off the foot of Ortega.
Coming out of halftime Benedictine scored their fourth and final goal of the game as Stammer netted a penalty kick. Edgewood College (5-4-2, 0-2-2 NACC) quickly responded, as Garrett Lee scored in the 59th minute. The senior made an incredible diving play to head the ball past the Benedictine goalkeeper and into the net. Edgewood College was unable to serve up a comeback, taking just two shots in the remaining 31 minutes.
Eagle goalkeeper Carson Hughes made five saves in the loss. Sean Surtees and Lee led the Eagles, each with two shots, including three on goal. Benedictine outshot the Eagles 22-6 for the match.
Edgewood College will return to action on Wednesday, October 3. The Eagles will travel to Lakeland University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
