Eagles offense comes alive against Regents and Pioneers

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team was victorious twice in front of their home crowd on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles found an offensive spark, sweeping Rockford University and winning 3-1 against UW-Platteville. After struggling offensively in the past six games the Eagles broke their losing streak, recording a hitting percentage of .204 in their home triangular.

Behind eight aces and an offense that registered 45 kills and a season-high .242 hitting percentage, Edgewood College (4-11, 2-2 NACC) owned a 25-19, 25-23, 25-15 sweep over Rockford University. 

With the Regents leading 23-20 late in the second set, the Eagles put together a string of kills heading into the third set. Sarah Pfeifer got things going, putting down a kill. Erika Van Engen followed with two kills, and Tori Wiskow finished things off with a kill of her own. All four of the kills were assisted by Alex Zapuchlak

Sarah Pfeifer added a team high 10 kills, hit .500 to tie her season-high hitting percentage, and added six digs. Sophomore Amanda Meister recorded a team-high 12 digs. Senior Alex Zapuchlak and junior Brittany Sager combined for 29 assists and 12 digs.

UW-Platteville (6-9) gave the Eagles a battle in the final match of the day, but it was the Eagles who utilized some clutch plays to outlast the Pioneers 3-1 in a 25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23 victory. In total, Mackenzie Doherty finished the match with 12 kills, Lizzie Lightner put down an impressive eight kills to tie her season-high hitting percentage of .600, Alex Zapuchlak recorded 22 assists, and Sarah Uczen came through with 18 digs. 

The Eagles dominated the second set as five different Eagles recorded kills in the set. Overall the Eagles recorded a match-high .375 hitting percentage. Mackenzie Doherty led the Eagles with five kills, and Nichole Schaeve recorded three digs in the second set.

After surrendering the third set 21-25 to the Pioneers, the Eagles offense and defense came together to win the fourth set. In a set that featured 10 ties and five lead changes, Meister came through with five digs. The Eagles held the Pioneers to a .000 hitting percentage in the set, and took advantage of 11 hitting errors. Everything came together for the Eagles, as five players recorded two or more kills.

Next up for the Eagles is a non-conference bout with Ripon College this Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Edgedome.
