Eagles serve up 13 aces in sweep of Red Hawks

MADISON, Wis. – Aces were the name of the game in the Eagles Tuesday night 3-0 sweep over Ripon College. Brittany Sager posted a career high eight aces in the contest, just one shy of the service aces record posted by Savannah Koester in 2017. The Eagles rocked the Edgedome to win their third straight contest.

Ripon College (5-11) may have actually been getting the better of the Eagles early in the first set, taking a 7-3 lead. However, the Eagles tied the set at 13-13 following a kill by Lizzie Lightner. Sophomore Brittany Sager took charge, leading the Eagles on an eight point run featuring three service aces and four kills. The Red Hawks struggled to control the serve of Sager through the entire contest.

The first set was as close as the Red Hawks would get, as the Eagles rolled out to a 13-7 lead in the second set. Sager posted another six point run and added four aces to total seven. Seghan Northey and Mackenzie Doherty each had three kills in the second set as the Eagles hit a match-best .300 attack percentage. In the third set, kills from Northey, Megan Schwartz, and Pfeifer had the Eagles up 12-6. Ripon would close within 15-14 late in the set, but kills by Grace Zimmer and Red Hawk attacking errors would maintain the lead for the Eagles. Pfeifer had five kills, while Alex Zapuchlak and Sarah Uczen both recorded six digs in the third set.

Sager had a fantastic night, recording eight service aces, good for second place in the record books. Overall, the contest featured kills from 12 different Eagles, for a total of 34 kills. Sarah Pfeifer led the offense with a team-high nine kills, Sager and Zapuchlak combined for recorded 28 assists, and Uczen posted a team-high 14 digs.

Edgewood College will head to Dominican University on Friday, September 28 for a conference matchup. Action will begin at 7:00 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
