MADISON, Wis. – A late push in the last two sets of the match was not enough for the Eagles to overtake Concordia University Wisconsin on Tuesday night. The Edgewood College volleyball team struggled to find an offensive spark early on in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21) defeat in the Eagles home opener.
Down two sets, the Eagles (2-10) rallied back with a 26-24 third set victory behind a flurry of timely kills. Early in the set the Eagles led 15-11 off two aces from Brittany Sager, and a kill from Mackenzie Doherty. Concordia Wisconsin (8-2) quickly bounced back, capitalizing on Eagle errors. Both the Eagles and Falcons continued a back and forth battle defined by errors and kills on both sides of the net. After a late 24-24 tie, Cole Jordee ignited the Eagles as she went to the corner on two to make the score 25-24. The Eagles would win the set 26-24 a point later on an attack error from Concordia Wisconsin. Jordee's strategic play was the turning point the Eagles needed.
The Falcons and Eagles battled in a final set that saw 14 ties. Tori Wiskow, Megan Schwartz, and Sarah Pfeifer all recorded three kills in the fourth set. The Eagles found energy late in the set after Wiskow and Pfeifer executed perfect back corner kills. The offensive energy was not enough to overcome the Falcons, as the set ended in favor of Concordia Wisconsin 25-21.
Alex Zapuchlak totaled 20 assists and sophomore Sarah Uczen added a team-high 11 digs as the Eagles dropped the fourth match in a row against the Falcons.
Amanda Schultz fueled the Falcons offense with 15 kills, Haley Sedo racked up 27 assists and six digs, and Madelyn Alton tallied 14 digs to lead a Concordia Wisconsin team that beat No. 19 Carthage three days ago.
The Eagles look to bounce back, as they travel to Plymouth, Wis. on Friday, September 21 to take on Lakeland University at 7:00 p.m.
