Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Gusties, Blugolds too much for Eagles on Saturday

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team wrapped up a difficult weekend at the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Invitational on Saturday. The Eagles lost in straight sets to a couple of the region's best teams, Gustavus Adolphus College and the host school UW-Eau Claire to finish the tournament 0-4. Edgewood College will have to shake off the weekend frustrations quickly as NACC co-favorite Concordia University Wisconsin comes to town on Tuesday for the Eagles' home opener.

In Saturday's opening match at the McPhee Center, Edgewood College (2-9) struggled to mount a consistent offense, only hitting in positive numbers in the third set. The Eagles had 14 kills in the third set and hit .179 but ultimately lost the match to Gustavus Adolphus (9-2) by scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-21.

Sarah Pfeifer and Mackenize Doherty each had seven kills for the Eagles, with Pfeifer also scoring two service aces. Seghan Northey led the team with four aces, while Brittany Sager had a team-high 14 assists. Sarah Uczen was the only Eagle in double figures in digs with 14 for the match.

The Eagles closed the tournament against host UW-Eau Claire (11-1) who are currently receiving votes in the AVCA NCAA Division III Top 25 poll. The Eagles hit the ball much better against the Blugolds, with a .214 attack percentage in the first set. Edgewood College finished the match with a .141 percentage in falling 25-22, 25-20, 26-24.

Pfeifer again led the Eagles with nine kills, while Lizzie Lightner and Doherty each had six kills without a single error. Lightner hit a season-best .600 for the match. Sarah Uczen had 16 digs, while Alex Zapuchlak and Sager were both in double figures with 14 and 10 assists, respectively. Northey led the Eagles again with three service aces.

Edgewood College will try to remain unbeaten in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference on Tuesday night in a big home opening match against Concordia University Wisconsin. The match begins at 7:00 p.m.
