Eagles fall in first two matches at Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team didn't exactly experience a warm Minnesota welcome in their first two matches at the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament. The Eagles dropped a pair of matches to teams from the Land of 10,000 Lakes, falling to Concordia College-Moorhead and Augsburg University, both by scores of 3-1. The Eagles will have two more matches on Saturday.

The opening match, started with promise for the Eagles. After trailing 20-17, the Eagles rallied for a 25-23 win. Tori Wiskow ended the set with a kill to give Edgewood College (2-7) a 1-0 lead. However, Concordia-Moorhead (3-7) bounced back to take the next three sets and win the match 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-19.

Mackenzie Doherty led the Eagles with 16 kills and a .387 attack percentage. Sarah Pfeifer had 11 kills and a team-high 13 digs in the match for a double-double. Brittany Sager led the Eagles with 34 assists.

In the second match, the Eagles dropped the first two sets to Augsburg University (9-2), before bouncing back behind three kills by Pfeifer for a third set victory. The Auggies finished off the victory in the fourth set 25-19, 25-10, 21-25, 25-15.

Doherty had 10 kills, representing the only Eagle in double figures. Alex Zapuchlak dished a team-high 19 assists while Sager led the back row with 12 digs.

Edgewood College will face Gustavus Adolphus College and the host, UW-Eau Claire in Saturday's matches.
