ANGOLA, Ind. – Coming off a season opening win, the Edgewood College men's soccer team struggled to find the back of the net on Saturday afternoon. Garrett Lee netted his first goal of the season, pushing him closer to the career goals record. The seniors efforts were not enough to spark an offensive run against Trine University in a 7-1 defeat.
As expected, senior Garrett Lee responded to two early goals by Trine University (1-0) with a goal of his own in the 9th minute. Freshman Zander Hartberg recorded the assist on the only Eagles goal of the day, after earning his second career start. Edgewood College (1-1) offense started the match with five aggressive shots before the 10th minute. The first half was dominated by Trine University's Ben Moricz who scored two goals within eight minutes of each other.
At halftime the Thunder's lead had increased, with five total goals scored in the first half of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Carson Hughes and sophomore goalkeeper Dan Dombrowski combined efforts totaled five saves on the day.
In the final minutes of the match, the Thunder added their final goal on a penalty kick. A total of 37 fouls between both teams were called throughout the match. Additionally, a total of seven yellow cards were distributed between both teams.
Most notably, Garrett Lee's first goal of the season marks his 33rd career goal, as he currently sits in a tie for fifth place in the Edgewood College men's soccer history books. Lee is chasing the 23 year old record of Jeff Ornes who scored 37 career goals between 1992 and 1995.
Overall, the Eagles recorded 10 shots in the contest, all taken by seven different players. Although the Eagles offense was only outshot by five (15-10) by the Thunder, only one shot was able to find the net.
The Edgewood College men's soccer team will return home to compete against Coe College in their home opener on Wednesday night. The Eagles will take the field at 7:00pm at Breese Stevens Field.
