OLIVET, Mich. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team begin the 2018 season in the winner's column with a victory over Olivet College 1-0 on Friday afternoon. The veteran Sean Surtees scored the only goal of the match.
At the 52-minute mark, junior Surtees put Edgewood College (1-0) on the board. Surtees was fouled by Olivet College (0-1), giving him the game winning penalty kick. It only seems fitting that Surtees score on a penalty kick, as he has three penalty kick goals against Olivet in the last two seasons. The previous time that Olivet and Edgewood College met, the Madison, Wis. Native scored two penalty kicks.
It took 13 minutes before either team registered a shot, as sophomore Scott Biancofiori struck first with a header into the arms of Comet goalkeeper Justin Lavin. Between both teams only four shots were taken in the first half of the contest, two of which were headers from the Eagles.
In the second half of the contest the Eagles offensive confidence increased, as they registered nine of 10 total shots taken. In the 63rd minute, Scott Biancofiori nearly scored a second goal, but his effort sailed over the crossbar. The Eagles defense, led by senior Ryan Henry limited the Comets to just two shots and two corner kicks. In fact, the defense was so strong that sophomore Dan Dombrowksi did not record a save in the entire contest.
Overall, Edgewood College outshot Olivet College 12-2, led by Scott Biancofiori and Garrett Lee with three shots a piece.
Edgewood College will have a quick turnaround, as the Eagles will face off against Trine University on Saturday afternoon. The contest will begin at 2:00 pm (ET) in Angola, Ind.
