MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Senior Shannon Whitmus became the second Eagle pitcher to reach 100 appearances and Hanna Fisher had four of the Edgewood College softball team's nine hits in a pair of tough losses at Wisconsin Lutheran, 7-0 and 10-1, on Monday afternoon.
The Eagle offense generated just one run and nine hits in 12 innings against a pair of the best pitchers in the NACC. It didn't help that the Warriors (12-14, 7-7 NACC) staked themselves to a 4-0 lead after the first inning of each game.
Despite both defeats, Whitmus (7-9) moved one step closer to making history as one of the most heavily used pitchers ever. She needs seven more appearances over the next eight games to tie the Eagles all-time record.
Hanna Fisher had two of the Eagles three hits as the offense was shut out for the first time in conference play in a 7-0 loss to the Warriors in game one.
Once again, another quick start doomed the Eagles as Wisconsin Lutheran plated four runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a 2-run double, a wild pitch, and an RBI single. The Warriors would add three more, including a steal of home in the bottom of the fifth, to stop the Eagles momentum after a walk-off win vs. Dominican on Sunday.
Fisher had her third multi-hit performance in the last five games and Hauge added a single as the Eagles were held to their fewest hits since March 14 against Wilmington. The Eagles stranded four runners and had their best scoring opportunity in the opening frame, but struck out to strand two.
Warrior starter Abby Mahsem was to blame for the Eagles struggles as she tossed a seven inning shutout with six strikeouts. She dropped her ERA under 2.00 for the season and also added two hits and one run scored.
It was much of the same in game two as Fisher registered two of the Eagles six hits, including an RBI single in the top of the fifth of a 10-1 defeat. Once again, the Eagles were trying to play catch up after the Warriors got out to a 7-0 lead through the first two innings.
The Eagles could have made it interesting after leaving the bases loaded with one out in the top of the first. A fielder's choice and strikeout ended the scoring opportunity.
The Warriors' Jessie Rago tossed three scoreless innings and Mahsem allowed one unearned run in relief. Mahsem also added a game-high three hits and three RBIs.
Next up is a doubleheader under the lights at Aurora University tomorrow (Tuesday) starting at 6:30 p.m.
