Spartans stifle Eagles in rare, night-time doubleheader

AURORA, Ill. – For the second day in a row, the Edgewood College softball team's offense was held in check against Aurora in a pair of losses, 4-2 and 9-1, in a rare, under-the-lights doubleheader on Tuesday. Aurora kept its perfect record in the series alive and improved to 28-0 against the Eagles.

The Eagles (12-18, 4-12 NACC) did pile up 13 total hits, including four by Amanda Meister, but were limited to only three runs and saw 11 of their runners left on base in their only night time doubleheader of the season. Runs were needed against an Aurora team that won their seventh and eighth straight and kept themselves in NACC title contention.

First basemen Jordan Anderson hit a 2-run double as the Eagles lost game one, 4-2, in an error-free game.

The Eagles allowed their opponent to score in the first inning for the fifth-straight game as the Spartans (20-12, 11-3 NACC) plated three quick runs in the bottom of the first off starter Amanda Meister (2-5). Anderson's run-scoring double in the fourth cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Spartans responded with an RBI single in the fifth to conclude the scoring.

Meister finished with two of the Eagles seven hits and took the loss on the bump. She tossed a career-high six innings, allowing four runs and only five hits.

Aurora's Hannah Tomasko (7-5) allowed two earned runs and struck out three over seven innings to earn the win. All-NACC infielder Josie Bachtell finished with two of the Spartans five hits.

The Spartans scored two runs in the first and scored seven unearned runs as the Eagles lost game two, 9-1, in five innings.

Errors were the difference in a game where the Eagles committed four miscues that led to seven unearned runs. Edgewood College allowed the Spartans to jump out to a 5-0 lead through three innings, with all five runs unearned.

The Eagle offense came alive late with an RBI groundout by Hanna Fisher in the fifth after putting two on with one out. A foul out ended it for an Eagle team looking to snap a four-game skid with another late afternoon doubleheader tomorrow.

Meister finished with a team-high two hits and drew one walk. Shannon Whitmus (7-10) suffered the loss after allowing four hits over three innings. She gave up six runs, but only one was earned.

Britni Wilson (7-4) allowed one earned run over five innings on the mound and Aly Teixeira collected three hits and two RBIs for the Spartans.

The Eagles face Rockford tomorrow afternoon on the road at 4:00 p.m. It will end their stretch of five straight days of doubleheaders.
