Game Recap: Baseball |

Raiders hang on to sweep Eagles in Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team entered the ninth inning of both games against MSOE down two runs, but couldn't put together a winning rally either time. The Raiders swept the Eagles 6-5 and 2-0 in home doubleheader relocated to Whitewater as Stampfl continues to dry from last week's snowstorm.

Edgewood College (7-18, 4-6 NACC) trailed 6-0 and only had four hits heading into its half of the eighth inning of game one. However, the Eagles rallied to put themselves back into the game. The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs, when Ryan Fields was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Casey Willis followed with the Eagles biggest hit of the day, smacking a three-run double to right center field and cutting MSOE's lead to 6-4.

Edgewood College went to the ninth and put the winning run in scoring position. Nick Cheaney doubled to bring home Bryan Sternig and move Alex Fowler to third base with one out. However MSOE's Caleb Willert got a strikeout and a ground out to save the win for MSOE (15-14, 7-5 NACC).

Willis went 2-for-4 with his double and three runs batted in. Steve Gavin pitched 7.2 innings with six strikeouts and five earned runs allowed. AJ Weedon and Jeff Wolf finished up the game for Edgewood College.

Edgewood College struggled to mount an offensive attack in the second game, but Logan Pitts kept them in the contest. Pitts shutout MSOE for six innings before being touched for single runs in the seventh and eighth. Pitts finished with a complete game and a career-high 10 strikeouts, allowing just one earned run. Sternig had two hits and a stolen base for the Eagles.

Edgewood College will rest and recover this week, before a challenging NACC weekend. The Eagles will be at Benedictine University on Saturday, and return home for Breast Cancer Recovery Day at Stampfl Field on Sunday against Aurora University.
