Fouls, turnovers offset Carpenter’s career night

MADISON, Wis. – Kelly Carpenter scored 20 points and added 13 rebounds, both career-highs, but it wasn't enough in a foul plagued, turnover-filled loss to Dominican, 70-62, on Wednesday night.

Carpenter shot 9-for-17 from the field with an array of post moves in the paint and posted 14 points and 10 rebounds in the second half. Delaney Wilhelm added 10 points and was the only other Eagle in double figures.

An ugly first half set the tone for the Eagles (9-13, 7-10 NACC), who were eliminated from NACC tournament contention with the loss. Diamond Pikulyk played just four minutes after getting hit hard under the basket and the other three posts, Allison Gordon, Sarah Jenkins, and Carpenter, were all whistled for three fouls apiece. The Eagles relied on 12 combined points by Wilhelm and Carpenter to tie it up at 29 at the break despite committing 13 first-half turnovers.

Neither team led by more than five points until the Stars (12-10, 8-9 NACC) opened up an 8-point lead midway through the fourth. Back-to-back jumpers by Wilhelm trimmed the Dominican advantage to 63-59 with 1:45 remaining. It was as close as the Eagles would get as the Stars knocked down seven of their final eight free throws, including four straight by center Katie Uzoras, to sweep the season series.

A defensive switch to 2-3 zone aided the Eagle defense in the second half against a Dominican offense that did most of their damage down low. Despite this adjustment, favorable matchups were hard to find due to foul trouble and wasn't helped late after Gordon fouled out with five minutes to go.

The Stars shot 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from deep, but nearly 50 percent inside the arc. The Eagles also struggled after shooting just 35 percent, hitting 2 of 12 three-pointers, and committing 19 turnovers.

Guards Timiya Ray (15 points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks) and Alexis Hoskins (15 points, 10 rebounds, and seven steals) both flirted with triple doubles and constantly found the paint. Uzoras added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Next up is a matchup at Marian this Saturday, February 10 at 4:15 p.m. in their final road game of the season. The Eagles go for the season sweep after beating Marian, 56-50, on December 9.
