FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Behind Kelly Carpenter's second straight double-double, the Edgewood College women's basketball team swept the season series against Marian with a 58-47 win in their road finale on Saturday afternoon.
Carpenter scored a team-high 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting and added a game-high 11 rebounds to help the Eagles (10-13, 8-10 NACC) hold off the Sabres after building an 11-point lead at halftime. Delaney Wilhelm added nine points while Abby Shane and Allison Gordon each added eight points.
Jennifer Freeman's four-point play, where she was fouled after draining a fadeaway 3-pointer, highlighted a decisive 15-2 run spanning the first and second quarters that put the Eagles firmly in control, 22-8. They led the home team by as many as 15 points and led the Sabres (3-20, 1-17 NACC), 27-16, going into the break.
Marian wouldn't go away on senior night and responded with a 6-0 run midway through the third quarter en route to a 37-32 deficit at the end of the period. The Eagles opened the fourth with a 6-0 run of their own and battled to a 51-44 lead with 3:34 remaining. It was as close as Marian would come as the Eagles made seven of their final eight free throws to sweep the season series. The Eagles beat Marian, 56-50, earlier this year.
The Eagle defense came to play and held Marian to 32 percent shooting, a 1-for-9 performance from behind the arc, and forced 16 Sabre turnovers that included nine steals.
Rachel Serchen led the Sabres with 16 points on nine rebounds on 8-for-20 shooting.
Next up for the Eagles is a matchup with Concordia Chicago in their penultimate home doubleheader on Valentine's Day this Wednesday, February 14 at 8:15 p.m.
