MADISON, Wis. - Despite being one of the best teams in the conference at getting to the free throw line, the Edgewood College men's basketball team made just two trips to the free throw line and were outscored by 18 points at the charity stripe in a 78-67 defeat against Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday afternoon. It spoiled a stand out performance by senior Arik Anderson, who scored a season-high 16 points.
Anderson, who knocked down his first five shots, finished with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting and four 3-pointers while scoring in double figures for the first time in 10 games. Travis Kell added 16 points and 11 boards in his sixth double-double of the season and Jake Negus scored 14, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles (7-14, 7-9 NACC) split the season series with Wisconsin Lutheran (6-15, 6-11 NACC).
Thanks to 13 first-half points and three 3-pointers by Anderson, the Eagles stayed within striking distance of the Warriors and trailed, 39-34, at the break. They kept it close and cut the Warrior lead to 52-46 after McClain Steffens knocked down a 3-pointer with 13:51 to go.
It was as close as the Eagles would come as the Warriors utilized four different scorers in a subsequent 7-0 run that gave them a 62-49 advantage with a little under nine minutes left. The Warriors capitalized on numerous Eagle fouls by scoring 12 of their final 16 points at the free throw line for their fourth win in the last five games.
The Eagles, who average nearly 14 free throw attempts per game, finished 1-for-4 at the line, both season-lows, while the Warriors countered with a 19-for-22 (86.4 percent) performance at the charity stripe. The Eagles were whistled for 20 fouls compared to just 12 for the Warriors and were also outrebounded, 44-27, on the afternoon.
Mack Knueppel hit 6 of 10 shots and led four Warriors in double figures with 20 points and seven boards. Collin Kennedy, one of the NACC's leading scorers at nearly 22 ppg, was held to 12 points on 4 of 13 shooting.
With four games remaining, the Eagles now trail Marian (10-11, 9-7 NACC) and Concordia Wisconsin (11-10, 9-7 NACC) by two games for the sixth and final NACC tournament spot.
They start the final stretch of the regular season this Tuesday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m. on the road at Dominican (4-17, 2-14). Dominican lost at Marian, 69-56, on Saturday.
