Stars grind past Eagles in second half

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – On a night when Edgewood College needed a great road performance to stay in the NACC Tournament race, the Eagles went cold in the second half, falling to Dominican University 58-52. The Eagles held a six-point lead at halftime, but played a majority of the second half from behind in suffering their seventh loss in their last eight games.

Edgewood College (7-15, 7-10 NACC) was largely in control through the first half, even if they never managed to put distance between themselves and the Stars. Sy Staver broke a 16-16 tie with a jumper in the paint that sparked a 10-3 run. Tyler Lemke scored three baskets in the paint and Emil Radisevic added two free throws for the Eagles largest lead of the game at 26-19. The Eagles would end the half leading 30-24 after a Ben Seefeld jumper.

Dominican University (5-17, 3-14 NACC) scored the first eight points of the second half to take the lead back from the Eagles. After two free throws by the Stars' Jonny Woolf forced the 10th tie of the game at 34-34, Nick LaVere put Dominican ahead with a layup and Woolf followed with a three-pointer. Seefeld and Staver scored to bring the Eagles back within 39-38, but they couldn't regain the lead.

Edgewood College clawed back and got within 56-52 on a pair Radisevic free throws with 57 seconds to play. However, Woolf ran down the shot clock and scored on a drive, and the Eagles' McClain Steffens missed a three-pointer on the other end. The Stars' Tim Robertson sealed the game with two free throws with six seconds remaining.

Edgewood College was led by Radisevic with 10 points on an 8-for-8 night at the free throw line. Kell, Lemke and Seefeld each had eight points for the Eagles. Steffens, Staver, Jake Negus and Radisevic shared team-high rebounding honors with six boards apiece. The Eagles were 10-for-10 from the free throw line, but failed to make a three-pointer in a game for the first time since January 12, 2008 against Benedictine University. The Eagles shot 35.6 percent for the game, but just 25.8 percent in the second half.

Woolf led Dominican with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. Andrew Wojick scored 11 points while Robertson and LaVere scored 10 points each. The Stars were outrebounded 40-27 by the taller Eagles, but hit 48.2 percent in the second half to pull out the victory and snap a 10-game losing streak.

Edgewood College will take their final road trip of the 2017-18 season on Saturday when they meet Marian University in Fond du Lac at 2:00 p.m.
