MADISON, Wis. - Edgewood College women's basketball may not be going to the postseason this year, but Wednesday night, the Eagles had at least one more message victory to send to the rest of the league. The Eagles completed a season sweep of NACC Tournament-bound Concordia University Chicago with an 86-74 victory at the Edgedome. Abby Shane led all scorers with 23 points, while Kelly Carpenter turned in a monster 16-point, 20-rebound game.
Edgewood College (11-13, 9-10 NACC) handled the Cougars' chaotic full-court pressure for the vast majority of the night, committing just four first half turnovers and leading for all but 26 seconds of the game. The Eagles made their first three three-point shots, two by Shane and one by Delaney Wilhelm, and built a quick 15-5 lead. The Eagles held a narrow 38-37 lead before scoring the final seven points of the first half on four points by Diamond Pikulyk and another Shane three-pointer.
Pikulyk turned that into an 11-0 Eagles run by then scoring the first four points of the second half for a 49-37 lead. Concordia University Chicago (17-7, 13-6 NACC) closed the gap to 49-44 on a three-pointer by Sophia Leon, Shane drilled another three-pointer and Allison Gordon and Carpenter scored before Jennifer Freeman put the Eagles back up by 13 at 59-46. The Cougars continued to press and closed the margin to nine points a couple of times, but the Eagles never let them back in the game.
Statistically, it was an incredible night for the Eagles. Edgewood College had five players in double figures for the first time since 2015. Shane scored 23 points on the strength of five three-pointers and shared game-high honors in assists with Brooke Lonigro with five.
Carpenter recorded her third straight double-double with 16 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. She became the first Eagle to record 20 rebounds in a game since Nickie Updike pulled down 21 boards against Lakeland College on December 3, 2005. Carpenter's 20 boards were the fourth most in school history and missed Hall of Famer Deb Boomsma's 1991 record of 22 by just two rebounds. Edgewood College had 60 total rebounds, marking the third highest total in school history and outrebounding the Cougars 60-40.
Pikulyk checked in with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Gordon and Freeman scored 10 each. Freeman was 2-for-2 from the three-point line. Delaney Wilhelm scored seven points, and also cracked double figures with 10 rebounds. Edgewood College had 17 assists against 16 turnovers facing the Cougars' pressure defense. The Eagles point total might have been in the high 90s if not for a subpar 14-for-31 night at the free throw line.
Concordia Chicago was led by Crystal Corr with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Cougars' leading scorer, Taylor Jacobsen had 14 points, but the Eagles held her to a 3-for-12 shooting night. Courtney Lofink tallied 12 points and five steals.
Edgewood College will wrap up the 2017-18 season with a home game against Benedictine University on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 pm.
