DUBUQUE, Iowa – Through two sets, the Edgewood College Volleyball team and Loras College were squared at one set apiece in a non-conference match Tuesday night. The host Duhawks would go on to control the final two sets, dealing the Eagles a non-conference setback, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18.
Edgewood received some strong performances, including an 11-kill and five-ace match from Sarah Pfeifer. Sarah Uczen added 21 digs in the match, while Lizzie Lightner and Seghan Northey each recorded three blocks. Edgewood did outblock Loras in the contest, 7-1.
The first two sets were back-and-forth affairs between the Eagles and Duhawks. In the thrilling opener, Loras scored the final three points after Edgewood built 23-22 advantage to escape with a 25-23 win. The Eagles responded with set two, scoring five-straight points after being tied 19-19. Loras would answer with three-straight points before the Eagles put the set away on a Duhawks errors.
The Duhawks took over in the final two sets, hitting .270 in the third and .273 in the clinching set. Loras finished the night with a .234 attack percentage compared to a .160 mark for the Eagles. The Duhawks also had 11 aces with Edgewood tallying seven.
Abby Allyger led Loras in postin g a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs. Alex Zapuchlak and Brittany Sager each finished with double-digit assist totals for the Eagles, recording 19 and 15, respectively. Amanda Meister chipped in 11 digs for Edgewood.
The Eagles will return to action with a home match against Carroll Thursday at 7 p.m. Thursday will be a Colon Cancer Awareness Game and fans are encouraged to wear blue, the color associated with the cause.
