Offense comes alive in win over Pioneers

MADISON, Wis. – On Colon Cancer Awareness Night the Edgewood College volleyball team came away with a thrilling 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 32-30) victory over Carroll University. The Eagles offense got off to a fantastic start, and finished off the match in the fourth-set, the closest set of the night. The Eagles handed the Pioneers their eighth loss on the season.

The Edgewood College (9-14) offense made quick work out of Carroll University (15-8) in the first set where they hit .367. The Eagles took advantage of a ten-point run in the middle of the second set to take a 2-0 lead early in the contest. Amanda Meister headed the second set victory, with a service run of 10 straight that featured four service aces and three Eagle kills.

The Pioneers made things interesting, taking the third set with 11 kills, 21 digs, and 3 blocks. Despite recording four service aces and out-blocking the Pioneers 4-3, the Eagles dropped the third set 23-25.

In a fourth set that featured 13 tie scores and seven lead changes, the Eagles found energy from the crowd in the Edgedome, taking the fourth set 32-30. Sarah Pfeifer led the way for the Eagles in the set with five kills and five digs. Sarah Uczen was instrumental in keeping the Eagles in it, as she came away with six digs. Pfeifer tied up the contest at 25-25 and 26-26 with kills. Behind a kill from Mackenzie Doherty, an ace from Grace Zimmer, and an attack error on the Pioneers the Eagles rocked the Edgedome to a thrilling non-conference victory.

Overall the Eagles came away with 10 total blocks, the highest blocking match since September 28 against Dominican University. Senior Cole Jordee led the Eagle offense with a season-high 13 kills, and Megan Schwartz came away with a season-high eight kills. Amanda Meister finished with a season-high five aces, and Alex Zapuchlak recorded a season-high two aces in the Eagles 14 ace match. Zapuchlak and Brittany Sager combined for 46 assists. Sarah Uczen recorded 19 digs, Meister came away with 13 digs, and Sarah Pfeifer wasn't far behind with 12 digs in the contest.

The Eagles will head to Whitewater, Wis. on Saturday, October 13 to take on two non-conference opponents at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. The first match begins at 2:00 p.m. against Bethel University, followed by UW-Stout at 4:00 p.m.
