RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Despite holding Concordia University Chicago to a .089 hitting percentage, the Edgewood College volleyball team were haunted by a flurry of errors in all three sets of a 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-23) defeat on Saturday afternoon.
Sarah Pfeifer paced the offense with eight kills, Brittany Sager and Alex Zapuchlak each added 14 assists, and Sarah Uczen carved up 11 digs as Edgewood College (8-13, 5-4 NACC) stayed in it with some stout defense that forced Concordia Chicago (9-12, 4-4 NACC) into 27 errors on the night. Despite recording nine aces in the contest, the Eagles also committed 14 service errors, preventing them from handling the Cougars.
In a first set that came down to the wire the Eagles hit a match high .128. All tied up at 24, Concordia Chicago took the set behind a kill from Shannon Stamp and an Eagle attack error.
The Cougars got off to an early 7-2 lead in the second set, and didn't let up from then on. Both teams hit under .061 in a second set that was defined by defense. Despite two late kills from Sarah Pfeifer, the Eagles were unable to catch the Cougars who wrapped up a second set victory on another Eagle attack error.
It was much of the same in the final set, as the Cougars broke a 22-22 tie with a kill from Jaylynn Johnson, and notched the win off an Eagle error. Concordia Chicago's Jaylynn Johnson posted 13 kills to lead an offense that was limited to a .089 hitting percentage. The Eagles struggled offensively, but kept things close with a defense that recorded 47 digs overall.
The Eagles turn to a non-conference matchup with Loras College on Tuesday, October 9. Action will begin in Dubuque, Iowa at 7:00 p.m.
