MADISON, Wis. – Despite holding undefeated Wisconsin Lutheran to a .114 hitting percentage, the Edgewood College volleyball team were haunted by errors in all five sets of a 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-8) defeat on Tuesday night. The loss snapped Edgewood College's five match winning streak.
Edgewood College (7-12, 4-3 NACC) were able to force a fifth set against Wisconsin Lutheran College (13-5, 4-0 NACC) after an exciting fourth set win. Everything seemed to come together for the Eagles in the fourth set, as a combination of kills from Mackenzie Doherty, Erika Van Engen, Sarah Pfeifer, and errors committed by the Warriors gave Edgewood College a 27-25 win.
The Eagles also won the second set, after starting down 12-6. Edgewood College took advantage of six straight errors, and two bad sets committed by the Warriors to take a 20-17 lead. The Eagles would go on to win the set 25-20 after four straight errors from Wisconsin Lutheran and a kill from Megan Schwartz.
Both teams hit under .094 in a first set that came down to the wire. All tied up at 23, Wisconsin Lutheran took advantage of two straight Eagle attack errors to win set one.
Erika Van Engen paced the offense with a season-high 12 kills, Alex Zapuchlak added 24 assists, and Sarah Uczen carved up 26 digs as Edgewood College forced Wisconsin Lutheran into a fifth set. On both sides of the net errors were committed, as each team committed 34. The Warriors offense bested the Eagles in a 15-8 fifth set victory.
Wisconsin Lutheran's Mercedes Pye posted 15 kills to lead an offense that was limited to a .114 hitting percentage, their lowest in conference play. The Eagles struggled offensively, recording a .050 hitting percentage, and have lost six games this season when hitting under .100.
The Eagles face MSOE on Friday, October 5 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Action will begin at 7:00 p.m.
