MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College volleyball team was unable to hold off undefeated Aurora despite a strong offensive effort in the third set. The Eagles ended up falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) to the Spartans on Senior Night.
Freshman Sarah Pfeifer led Edgewood College (9-17, 5-5 NACC) on the night with eight kills, while Alex Zapuchlak recorded 13 assists. The senior owned a team-high eight digs and Amanda Meister contributed seven more digs. Lizzie Lightner had an impressive night, putting up a season-high five blocks on a night where seniors Zapuchlak, Cole Jordee, and Tori Wiskow were recognized pre-game for their careers at Edgewood College.
Despite the loss, the Eagle trio has seen plenty of success over the years after winning one NACC championship in 2015 and compiling an overall record of 70-56, 32-11 in the NACC over four seasons.
In the first set, Aurora (17-5, 11-0 NACC) broke a 14-all tie with a kill from Katie Vondra. The senior who was named AVCA Second-Team All-American in 2017 led the Spartans through the first set with four kills and three digs. Despite holding the Spartans to a .143 hitting percentage in the first set, the Eagles offense struggled early in the match.
Aurora dominated the second set, hitting a match-high .303 once again behind the swing of Vondra. Senior Jordee added three kills and seemed to ignite the offense at times in both the second and third set.
The Eagles offense made things interesting in the third set, hitting .237 behind five kills from Pfeifer. In the closest set of the night three Eagles ignited the Edgedome throughout the set. Early on Mackenzie Doherty showed off her powerful swing, tying things up at 6-6. The Eagles rallied late in the set behind kills from Seghan Northey and Jordee Cole, but ultimately were unable to catch the Spartans.
Edgewood College will have a quick turnaround as they host Benedictine University in a crucial NACC match Saturday, October 20. The match is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
