MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Women's Volleyball team received a balanced attack in defeating Benedictine University, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. Edgewood College opened the match with a 25-22 win in set one before dropping the second set, 18-25. Edgewood College responded after the second set, rolling to 25-18, 25-19 wins to secure the NACC win.
Edgewood College received strong performances all over the court in hitting .237 on Saturday.
Mackenzie Doherty hit .294 while leading the team with 12 kills while
Sarah Pfeifer posted a double-double with 10 kills (.185) and 16 digs. Pfeifer also had a three-ace streak in the opening set which helped Edgewood College start the day up 1-0.
Alex Zapuchlak and
Brittany Sager did a good job of setting up the Edgewood College hitters on Saturday, combining for 41 assists. Zapuchlak distributed 24 of those helpers and added four service aces in a strong match for the senior. Sager added 17 digs and had one of the 13 Edgewood College aces.
Edgewood College trailed 19-20 in the opening set when Pfeifer took over with her impressive three-straight aces run. They closed the set on a 6-2 run, securing the 25-22 win. In the clinching set with Edgewood College leading 22-17, Zapuchlak posted back-to-back aces to pull them within a point.
Every facet seemed to be working well for Edgewood College on Saturday as they added seven blocks as a team. Doherty recorded four block assists while
Tori Wiskow chipped in with one block solo and two block assists.
For the match, Edgewood College ended up with a .237 to .180 edge in hitting. Edgewood College also finished with an edge in assists (47-42), aces (13-5), and blocks (7-4).
Benedictine was led by Taylor Dunwell, who finished with a match-best 14 kills. Alyssa O'Boyle contributed 38 assists for the visiting Eagles.
Edgewood College will return to action Wednesday with a trip to Marian University for a NACC match. The contest in Fond du Lac is set to start at 7 p.m.
