MADISON, Wis. – Despite a slow start, the Edgewood College women's basketball pulled away from Rockford after holding the Regents to 18 percent shooting in the second half of a 68-50 win on Wednesday night. Delaney Wilhelm poured in a game-high 17 points to go with nine rebounds and four 3-pointers as the Eagles won their second straight in a game they never trailed.
Allison Gordon loaded the stat sheet with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals in her fourth double-double of the year and Abby Shane continued her offensive resurgence with 12 points. Point guard Brooke Lonigro, among the national leaders in assists per game, tied a career-high with 11 assists to five different players. The Eagles first five buckets were courtesy of Lonigro dimes.
Both teams shot under 40 percent as the Eagles (8-10, 6-7 NACC) ended the first half with a 35-30 advantage over a Rockford team that was averaging just 40 points during its current five-game losing streak. An early 7-1 run capped by a Pikulyk jumper put the Eagles on top 44-33 at the 5:42 mark and they never looked back. The Eagles allowed just three field goal makes in the entire third period and outscored the Regents (4-14, 2-11 NACC), 17-8 in the third, as they went into the final quarter with a convincing 52-38 lead.
It didn't get much better for the visitors in the final stanza as the Eagle defense held the offensively challenged Regents to a 6-for-33 performance (18.2 percent) in the second half and 26.1 percent shooting on the game. It was the lowest shooting performance against the Eagle defense this season.
On the offensive end, the Eagles had success from deep with their most 3-pointers (8) during conference play while posting 18 assists on 25 made shots.
Neve Yerk paced the Regents with a 10-point, 11-rebound performance off the bench and helped Rockford outrebound the Eagles, 50-46. They lost their sixth-straight game and saw their two-game win streak against the Eagles snapped.
The Eagles await a challenging stretch that starts with a trip to Benedictine (13-5, 10-3 NACC) this Saturday, January 27 at 4:15 p.m. Benedictine beat Alverno, 63-42, on Wednesday night.
