Spartans best Eagles in Saturday shootout

AURORA, Ill. – Both teams shot over 50 percent in a high-scoring game that pitted one of the NACC's best defenses (Edgewood) against its top-scoring offense (Aurora). The Eagles shot over 55 percent from the field, 47 percent from deep, and made all 11 free throws, but their turnovers down the stretch proved to be the difference in a 94-84 overtime loss at Aurora on Saturday afternoon.

Emil Radisevic posted a team-high 21 points on a season-best 10 of 13 shooting while freshman Jake Negus added his first career double-double with 16 points and 13 boards. Tyler Lemke (13 points), Sy Staver (12), and Travis Kell (10) all scored in double figures.

After capitalizing on three Eagle turnovers in the final 46 seconds of regulation, Aurora (9-7, 8-3 NACC) missed the game-winning three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. The Eagles (6-10, 6-5 NACC) allowed Aurora, the league's top offense at 84.8 ppg, to open the OT period on a 9-2 run and faced an 88-81 deficit. After a quick 3-pointer by Negus with 1:35 to go, the Spartans took over and made six straight free throws to cap their third-straight conference victory.

Both teams shot 58 percent in a blistering second half that saw the Eagles give up a 10-point lead with 14:57 left in regulation. Aurora never led in the second period and slowly chipped away at the Eagle lead. Two free throw makes by Staver, who also dished out a season-high eight assists, put the Eagles up 79-75 with 1:30 to go. The Spartans' Marcus Myers capitalized on two straight Eagle turnovers to tie it up at 79 with 27 seconds left. Another Eagle turnover with one second left gave the Spartans one last 3-pointer, but their last-gasp attempt rattled out.

The Eagles committed 21 turnovers, including six in the final 5:46 of the game, and were the victim of 11 Spartan steals. Both teams had five players in double figures in a game that featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes.

Marcus Myers scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting for the Spartans, who outscored the Eagles 25-11 at the free throw line.

Next up for the Eagles is a matchup with Lakeland (10-6, 7-5 NACC) next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. on the road. Lakeland saw its three-game conference win streak snapped at Concordia Wisconsin, 90-76, on Saturday.
