Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eagles unable to overcome cold first half

MADISON, Wis. - A first half deficit proved too much to overcome as the Edgewood College men's basketball team saw their five-game conference winning streak snapped in a 72-65 loss to Concordia University Wisconsin. The Eagles trailed by 17 points at halftime, and despite a 28-point effort from senior Travis Kell, couldn't overcome it in the second half.

Edgewood College (6-9, 6-4 NACC) held an early 6-2 lead on a pair of baskets by Kell sandwiched around a jump shot from Jake Negus, but the Eagles would go cold from the field. Edgewood College would make just four of their next 14 shots, while Concordia University Wisconsin (7-8, 5-5 NACC) would roll out to a 28-14 lead. The Falcons would hit their largest lead of the game at 35-16, before a basket by the Eagles' Ben Seefeld to end the first half.

The Eagles still seemed poised to make a game of it, bursting out of the locker room with a 9-0 run on three Kell baskets and a three-point play by Emil Radisevic. But CUW's Jake Jurss quieted the home crowd with three three-pointers in a span of 1:08.

Edgewood College received another opportunity to get back in the game at the 11:27 mark, when Negus scored and got fouled and Concordia Wisconsin was hit with a technical foul. Arik Anderson sunk both technical foul free throws and Negus completed his three-point play to bring the Eagles within nine points at 51-42.

The Eagles cut the Falcons margin down to seven points, multiple times, but each time CUW turned back the threat. Usually it was Josh Hau scoring for the Falcons as he finished with a game-high 30 points.

Kell went 13-for-17 from the field to finish with 28 points, but Negus was the only other Eagle in double figures with 13 points. Negus and Staver each had five assists, while Radisevic led the team with nine rebounds. The Eagles dominated the inside game, outscoring CUW 40-18 in the paint, but the Falcons owned a 20-8 advantage at the free throw line.

After Hau, Jurss was the only other Falcon in double figures with 18 points, on 4-for-6 shooting from the three-point line. CUW shot 50 percent (8-for-16) from the arc for the games.

Edgewood College faces their third game this week on Saturday, when the team travels to Aurora University for a men's/women's doubleheader against the Spartans. The men's game tips off at 2:00 p.m.
