MADISON, Wis. – In an uptempo battle between two of the NACC's middling offenses, it was the Edgewood College women's basketball team that fell short against Dominican, 85-77, in a shootout on Wednesday night.
Pace of play was never an issue as both seemed to outpace the other en route to easily setting a pair of season-highs in points scored during conference play. It was the first time the Eagles had scored 77 or more points in a conference game since exactly two years ago.
Diamond Pikulyk scored a career-high 21 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, to go with nine rebounds as the Eagles (6-8, 4-5 NACC) lost their second straight against the Stars following a six-game win streak in the series. Fellow freshman Abby Shane hit her first four shots and finished with 17 points and a career-high six assists. Kelly Carpenter added career-highs of 15 points and five boards and Allison Gordon chipped in with 10 points.
Pikulyk and Carpenter took advantage of an outmatched interior defense by shooting a combined 17-for-25 (68 percent) from the field.
The Stars and the Eagles surpassed their season scoring averages of 62.9 ppg and 60.9 ppg, respectively, with over a minute remaining in the third quarter and Dominican leading 68-60. A fourth quarter full of Eagle fouls and a multitude of Dominican free throws proved to be the difference for a pair of teams looking to stay in NACC tourney contention.
The Stars (7-7, 3-6 NACC) converted 7 of 14 free throws on 10 Eagle fouls in the final period compared to an 0-for-1 performance from the charity stripe off of three Star fouls for Edgewood College.
Pikulyk put up eight of the Eagles first 10 points in the fourth thanks to her strength and positioning on the block. Her final bucket cut the Stars' lead to 80-71 with 2:14 remaining. A trio of free throw makes extended the Dominican advantage to 83-71 before a pair of long, back-to-back 3-pointers by Jennifer Freeman and Shane made it a six-point game with 48 seconds left. Dominican, already a poor free throw shooting team that shot 11-for-24 (45.8 percent) on the game, knocked down 2 of 4 free throws to close out the Eagles.
Timiya Ray led four Dominican players in double figures with 25 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs, on 11 of 19 shooting. Ray had 10 points in the first half and helped lead a Dominican offense that shot nearly 56 percent and owned a 50-45 halftime advantage.
In one of the fastest games of the year, both squads took care of the ball and produced a combined 36 assists to only 25 turnovers.
The Eagles head to Aurora (7-7, 5-4 NACC) this Saturday at 4:15 p.m. Aurora is tied for the fifth spot in the NACC, while the Eagles currently occupy seventh-place in the conference.
