AURORA, Ill. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team went to the free throw line 38 times, but Aurora University outscored the Eagles 28-18 in the fourth period to claim a 77-62 victory on Saturday at Thornton Gymnasium. Delaney Wilhelm scored 14 points, and Brooke Lonigro posted a new career-high as the Eagles dropped their third consecutive game.
Edgewood College (6-9, 4-6 NACC) took a 16-12 lead after the first quarter, as Diamond Pikulyk scored the first three baskets for the Eagles. Aurora University (8-7, 6-4 NACC) stormed back to take the lead early in the second quarter, but Annika Lundgren came off the bench to score five straight points in a 24-second span to put the Eagles back in front 23-22. The teams traded the lead twice more before settling for a 28-28 halftime tie.
The Eagles trailed for a majority of the third quarter, but grabbed the lead with 1:22 remaining on a Lonigro jumper that put Edgewood College ahead 44-43. However, the Spartans scored the final six points of the quarter including a steal and a layup by Julie Galauner to take a 49-44 lead in the final period. Aurora gave Edgewood College lots of opportunities from the free throw line in the fourth period, but the Eagles couldn't get enough stops on the defensive end. The Spartans posted 28 points in the fourth quarter to win going away.
Wilhelm led the Eagles with 14 points, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. She went 5-for-9 from the field. Longiro set her new personal standard with 12 points, including an 8-for-8 night at the free throw line. Jennifer Freeman was the third Eagles in double figures, adding 10 points. Lonigro and Allison Gordon each had a team-high three assists. Edgewood College went to the free throw line 38 times, making 26 free throws. It was the fifth-most free throws attempted by an Eagles team in program history.
Aurora University won despite having five players, including four starters foul out of the game. Adriana Ramirez, Bri Hall and Galauner each scored 17 points, while Meija Rabi tallied 15 points. The Spartans shot 46.8 percent from the field and made seven three-point baskets.
Edgewood College will try to snap their current three-game losing streak next Tuesday, with a trip to Lakeland University. Tip-off time from Woltzen Gymnasium is 7:00 p.m.
