MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team was met with a rough welcome to this year's edition of the NACC-IIAC Challenge on Friday at Concordia University Wisconsin. The Eagles fell in straight sets to Wartburg College before losing a much closer match to Luther College 3-1. Edgewood College will face Coe College and Nebraska Wesleyan University tomorrow to conclude the event.
In the opening match, Wartburg College (9-2) controlled the match as the Eagles' offense never quite got on track. The Knights claimed victory by scores of 25-11, 25-19, 25-11. Mackenzie Hannan had the strongest match among Edgewood College (4-9) attackers scoring nine kills with just one error and hitting .364. Savannah Koester and Renee Meister had four kills apiece. Haley Schwenn led the Eagles with 12 assists, while Sarah Uczen had a team-high 12 digs.
Luther College (8-4) pulled out two of their sets be working beyond the 25-point limit, taking a 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24 victory. In the first set, the Eagles led 22-18, but the Norse rallied for five straight points to the take the lead. In the second set, the Eagles scored six straight points on the serve of Amanda Meister to turn an 18-15 deficit into a 21-18 lead.
The Eagles were led by Mackenzie Doherty who hit .323 with 12 kills and only two errors. Koester als o had 12 kills to go with 10 digs for a double-double. Erike Van Engen added 10 kills herself. Schwenn ed the Eagles with 24 assists, while Alex Zapuchlak added 19 assist. Uczen had 17 digs while Nichole Schaeve recorded 12. The Eagles hit .145 for the match.
