MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team faced their first five-set test of the season, and came out on top in a 3-2 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University on the second day of the NACC-IIAC Challenge. Unfortunately, the Eagles fell to Coe College 3-1 in the day's second match despite winning the first set.
Against Nebraska Wesleyan (7-7), the Eagles burst out to a 2-0 lead, only to have the Prairie Wolves rally back and force a fifth set. In that set, the Eagles opened up a 7-2 lead on the strength of four straight service points from Alex Zapuchlak. The Eagles reached match point at 14-9, but NWU scored three straight points until Mackenzie Doherty finished the match with a kill for a 25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 15-12 victory.
Erika Van Engen led the Eagles with a career-high 13 kills and a .290 hitting percentage. Savannah Koester and Doherty each finished with a 11 kills, with Koester setting a new single-match school record with nine service aces. She broke the record of eight that she and Katie Stankowski had held jointly.
Zapuchlak led the Eagles with 20 assists, although Haley Schwenn surpassed a milestone with 19 assists. Schwenn became the fifth Eagle in program history to reach 2,000 career assists. Sarah Uczen had a season-high 34 digs in the marathon match. Renee Meister recorded seven blocks in the match.
In the final match of the NACC-IIAC Challenge, Edgewood College (5-10) took the first set from Coe College but lost 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-12. Koester and Doherty led the way with 10 kills apiece. For Doherty, it marked her third straight double-digit kills match. Renee Meister had nine kills and five total blocks including a solo block. Schwenn totaled 21 assists and 12 digs, while Uczen collected a team-high 13 digs.
Edgewood College will return to action next Friday at the Edgedome with a key match against Dominican University. The Eagles will then host Concordia University Chicago and Maranatha Baptist University in a Saturday triangular.
