TACOMA, Wash. – The Edgewood College volleyball team dropped both matches against St. Thomas, 3-0, and Saint Benedict, 3-2, on the final day of the Puget Sound Premiere, but didn't go down without a fight. Senior Savannah Koester was the lone Eagle named to the All-Tournament team and junior Emily Chaussee led the way with her first two double-doubles of the year.
After finding themselves trailing by two sets to Saint Benedict, the Eagle offense kicked into gear and nearly pulled off the five-set comeback in a 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 20-25, 15-6 defeat. The Eagles (0-4) hit .400 and .156 in winning the third and fourth sets, respectively, after hitting a combined .034 in the first two sets.
The offense was outhit .600 to -.200 in the final set and couldn't overcome eight straight points by the Blazers to conclude their most competitive match of the season. Chaussee had 13 kills and 20 digs, Savannah Koester registered 15 kills, and Brittany Sager and Haley Schwenn combined for 50 assists.
In their first-ever matchup with the Tommies, the Eagles kept it close, but ultimately fell, 25-22, 25-18, 36-34. Koester posted a team-high 12 kills and a .423 hitting percentage as the Eagles registered a season-best .140 mark on offense.
Despite being down two sets to none, the Eagles and the Tommies went toe to toe in a final set that finished 36-34. Besides an early 7-4 lead by St. Thomas, neither team led by more than one until the Tommies broke a 34-34 tie thanks to an Eagle service error followed by the decisive kill. In the back-and-forth affair, the Eagles were able to fend off four match points thanks to a quartet of timely kills.
Chaussee finished with 10 kills and 18 digs and was one of four Eagles with 10 or more kills. Freshman Sarah Uczen added a game-high 25 digs, while Schwenn posted 21 assists.
The Eagles head to the UW-Oshkosh Triangular to take on host UW-Oshkosh and Wheaton College (Ill.) this Wednesday, September 6 starting at 4:00 p.m.
