MADISON, Wis. – Junior Emily Chaussee earned her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs, but it wasn't enough in a 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11) defeat to UW-Eau Claire on Monday night in the Eagles home opener.
Down two sets, the Eagles (2-7) rallied back with a 25-23 third set victory behind a flurry of timely kills. After a 19-19 tie, the Eagles utilized kills by Chaussee, Renee Meister, and Erika Van Engen to take the 24-22 lead. A subsequent Blugold kill didn't faze the Eagles as senior Savannah Koester wrapped up the set with one of her nine kills.
The Blugolds (4-4) took control in the final set and ran away with the match after building a 15-2 lead. Errors plagued the Eagles as they mustered a -.304 hitting percentage and allowed UW-Eau Claire to hit .280.
Both Haley Schwenn and Alex Zapuchlak each totaled 15 assists and freshman Sarah Uczen added a team-high 14 digs as the Eagles stayed winless against the Blugolds in their third overall meeting.
Madelyn Pashibin recorded 18 kills on only 22 total attacks, Madison Surprise racked up 44 assists and 13 digs, and Talia Jaskulske tallied 26 digs to lead a Blugold team that beat No. 2 Northwestern-St. Paul two days ago.
The Eagles look to bounce back in their NACC opener at Wisconsin Lutheran this Wednesday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
