MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Edgewood College volleyball head coach Paul Schlomer challenged his Eagles squad with a difficult non-conference schedule to open the season. For the opening night of NACC play, the strategy seems to have worked, as the Eagles swept past Wisconsin Lutheran College 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 for a conference schedule opening win.
A recurring theme for the night was Edgewood College (3-7, 1-0 NACC) holding the lead and turning back every Warriors run. In the first set, the Eagles held a 16-13 lead before WLC tied the match at 18-18. The Eagles scored the next four points with aid of two assisted blocks by Mackenzie Hannan and Tori Wiskow, but WLC rallied to tie the set again at 22-22. Back-to-back kills by Emily Chaussee and Renee Meister to bring the Eagles to set point. One point later, Meister ended the set with a kill to the back left corner.
The Eagles and Warriors were tied again at 12-12 in the second set, when Chaussee served an ace to spark a 4-0 run. Meister and Mackenzie Doherty had kills in that stretch. Savannah Koester scored a kill on Sarah Uczen's serve and the Eagles pushed their advantage out to 20-14. Koester finished the set with an ace, one of a team-high four she had in the match. Renee Meister collected seven kills on eight attempts in the second set.
The Eagles dominated the third set early on, rolling out to a 14-6 lead and never looking back. Meister had four more kills in the third set.
Meister was an unstoppable force, scoring 13 kills on just 18 attempts with one error for a hitting percentage of .667. Her attack rate would have set a single match school record, but she didn't reach the minimum of 20 attack attempts to qualify. Meister also posted a team-high four blocks including two solo efforts. Emily Chaussee had nine kills, while Savannah Koester added seven kills and four service aces. Haley Schwenn dished out 17 assists, while Sarah Uczen led the Eagles with 15 digs.
Wisconsin Lutheran College (3-6, 0-1 NACC) received eight kills from Alyssa Charon and 15 digs from Britley Grulke. The Warriors hit just .010 for the match compared to Edgewood College's .200 attack percentage.
Edgewood College will take a rare September weekend off, but return to the Edgedome next Wednesday, September 20 for a 7:00 p.m. NACC match against Alverno College.
