Warriors rally to split with Eagles

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team was just an inning or two away from much needed NACC doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College. However, the Warriors rallied from behind to take a 7-6, 10-inning victory in the second game to earn a split. Steve Gavin dominated from the mound in Edgewood College's 6-1 win in the opening game.

Edgewood College (19-14, 7-9 NACC) took a first inning lead in the opening game when Nick Lehner singled home Danny Appino. Lehner added another RBI single in the fifth inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran College (14-18, 6-10 NACC) touched Eagle starting pitcher Steve Gavin for the only run he would allow to make it 2-1 after five innings.

However, the Eagles broke the game open with three runs in the seventh. After an Appino bunt single and a hit to right field for Jonathan Roehler, Lehner stepped up again with a double off the right center field wall to push the Eagles advantage to 4-1. Two batters later Tim Nunn roped a single to right to bring home Lehner. Garrett Bugucki added a ninth inning insurance run with an RBI single to score Roehler.

Gavin was on fire, scattering seven hits and allowing just the one run. Roehler and Lehner each had three hits in the game with Roeher boasting three runs scored and a stolen base, and Lehner recording a double and four runs batted in.

In game two, Edgewood College jumped out to a 6-1 lead through five innings, but couldn't hang on. After a Jeff Tucker RBI single put the Eagles on the board in the second, Appino delivered a bases-loaded three-run double down the left field line for an early 4-0 lead. In the fifth, the Eagles received an RBI groundout from Nik Visone and a sacrifice fly by Callen Gavic to take a five-run lead.

The Warriors finally got to Edgewood College starter Adam Eck in the sixth inning with three unearned runs. Wisconsin Lutheran tied the game with two runs in the eighth, although it might have been worse had not Appino thrown out a WLC runner at the plate.

The Eagles put Jeff Tucker on second base with two outs in the 10th inning on a single and an error, but the Eagles couldn't bring him home. In the bottom of the 10th, WLC's Curtis Engelbrecht delivered the dagger with an RBI single down the right field line.

All six Warrior runs in the game were unearned due to five Eagle errors. Eck went 5.2 innings striking out nine batters and allowing seven hits. Alex Meister struck one in a little more than an inning of work. Jared Horton pitched the eighth, and Appino suffered his first loss of the season, despite striking out three batters in the ninth and 10th innings.
