Aurora sweeps Eagles, deliver hit to postseason hopes

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Edgewood College baseball team's hopes of making the NACC Tournament took a severe hit on Tuesday night in Whitewater. The Eagles dropped the first game to Aurora 4-2 in 12 innings, which was a completion of the teams' suspended game from last Friday. Then the Spartans pounded out 14 hits in a 16-0 victory in game two. Edgewood College slipped to eighth place in the league with the two losses.

Game one resumed in the bottom of the seventh inning with Edgewood College (19-16, 7-11 NACC) leading 2-0, but Aurora scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to force extra. In the 12th, Aurora University (22-14, 11-7 NACC) broke through with an RBI double by Mike Cherven, followed by an RBI single by Nicholas Mathey for a 4-2 Aurora lead. Edgewood College had just three baserunners, all via walks, over the last five innings.

For the complete game, Nick Lehner and Tim Nunn each had two hits. Alex Fowler had a double while Jonathan Roehler had a single and a stolen base. Blake Bieri went seven innings before the suspension allowing two hits and striking out two batters. Steve Gavin pitched the eighth and Danny Appino finished the game, suffering his second loss of the season.

The second game was over early as Aurora scored 10 runs in the first three innings. The Eagles committed six errors leading to six unearned runs. Lehner had Edgewood College's only hit in the game, with a leadoff single in the second inning. Starter Jeff Wolf slipped to 3-3 on the season with the loss.

Edgewood College will play UW-Oshkosh in a non-conference game Wednesday at 3:00 in Oshkosh. The Eagles will wrap up their regular season on Saturday with their final conference doubleheader at home against Concordia University Wisconsin. The Eagles will also celebrate LSM Chiropractic Senior Day at the conclusion of the games.
