MADISON, Wis. – Freshman Drew Freitag came off the bench to hit six three-pointers on six attempts, and McClain Steffen scored the winning basket with 2.3 seconds remaining as Edgewood College stunned NACC preseason favorite Aurora University 66-65 in the Eagles' conference opener. The Eagles claimed their first victory of the season after three defeats.
The Edgedome crowd was treated to a thriller, as Aurora University (2-2, 1-1 NACC) rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to take three-point leadat 63-60 with 1:42 remaining. Steffens answered with a three-pointer from right corner to tie the game, but Aurora's Matt Dunn made two free throw to put the Eagles down 65-63. Edgewood College (1-3, 1-0 NACC) had a chance to tie the game with 48 seconds to go, but Jake Negus made only one of two free throws.
Aurora ran the shot clock down on the next possession, but misfired on a jump shot. The Eagles opted to go without a timeout. Sy Staver held the dribble on the right wing, then drove hard in toward the free throw line. Staver kicked it to Steffens on the left wing, who split the Spartans defense for a scooping layup with 2.3 second remaining to give the Eagles a 66-65 lead.
After a pair of timeouts, Aurora inbounded to Marcus Myers, but his running three-point attempt was off the mark.
Before Steffens heroics, Freitag threatened to own the headlines. Edgewood College went nearly six minutes without a field goal to open the second half while Aurora erased the Eagles halftime lead, but Freitag pulled the Eagles out of their drought with his third three-pointer of the game. At the 9:13 mark, Freitag hit his sixth three-pointer of the game, to put Edgewood College up 56-48.
Freitag set a new Edgewood College single-game record by going 6-for-6 (100 percent) from the three-point line, breaking Tal Diekvoss's record of 6-for-7 (87.5 percent) on December 28, 2014 against Ramapo College. His six three-pointers was one short of the record of seven, held by Diekvoss (January, 27, 2015 vs. MSOE) and Cory Whitsell (February 4, 1999 vs. Lakeland).
Freitag was the Eagles leading scorer with 18 points while Arik Anderson also came off the bench to score 10 points. Steffens scored five of the Eagles last six points to finish with nine for the game. Travis Kell pulled down 10 rebounds, while Negus finished with a game-high five assists. Edgewood College committed 23 turnovers, but shot 44.9 percent from the field and seven three-pointers.
Myers was almost impossible to contain in the second half, scoring 15 of his game-high 22 points after halftime. Max Vickers had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans. Aurora entered the game averaging 92.7 points per game, but the Eagles held the high-scoring Spartans to just 65 points and a 2-for-14 night at the three-point line.
For Edgewood College, it was their first NACC opening win since the 2014-15 season. The win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Spartans. Edgewood College will be on the road for their next NACC contest, a date with Rockford University on Tuesday. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
