Another epic rally leads to Eagle win

LISLE, Ill. – For the second time in the last three matches, the Edgewood College volleyball team spotted the opponent a 2-0 lead and rallied to win another five-set thriller, this time at Benedictine on Saturday afternoon.

Edgewood College (11-12, 6-2 NACC) lost the first set, 25-21, after hitting a pedestrian .136 then allowed Benedictine (4-18, 3-5 NACC) to mash .450 to lose a runaway second set. Then the rally began.

Facing a 21-20 deficit in a pivotal third set, Edgewood College rattled off three straight points off two kills by Tori Wiskow and Mackenzie Doherty and a Benedictine error to take the lead for good. Benedictine tied it up at 23, but Doherty and Mackenzie Hannan finished a third set that featured eight ties and four lead changes.

Riding their newfound momentum, Edgewood College tuned a 9-8 deficit into a 13-9 advantage thanks in part to a trio of Benedictine errors. They never looked back in a convincing 25-18 set four win.

A tense fifth-set ensued, but Edgewood College prevailed thanks to a clutch stretch when the score was tied at 10. Freshman Amanda Meister's only ace of the match put Edgewood College up 14-12 and in position for their third five-set victory of the year. A Benedictine service ace completed another epic comeback.

Renee Meister, who has been on a torrid stretch with at least 10 kills and a .318 hitting percentage in five of the last six matches, posted another solid outing with a match-high 14 kills and a .407 hitting percentage to lead an offense that hit .177. It was the first win all season where the Eagles hit below .180.

Haley Schwenn added the only double-double of the match with 22 assists and 13 digs while Sarah Uczen corralled a team-high 18 digs.

Benedictine also hit .177 and was led on offense by Kendall Holmes and her nine kills. Kristina Billie totaled a match-high 27 digs.

The Eagles will take a two-match break from conference play at Carroll University this Tuesday, October 17 at 7:00 p.m.
