Another slow start, another Eagles 5-set win

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Despite losing the first set for the fourth straight match, the Edgewood College volleyball team fought their way back to beat Carroll, 3-2 (17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 16-25, 15-10), on the road Tuesday night. It was the Eagles third, five-set victory in their last four matches.

Savannah Koester and Mackenzie Doherty combined for 21 kills, and Haley Schwenn and Alex Zapuchlak contributed 42 assists to pioneer an offense that continued the trend of getting better and better as the match wore on. Sarah Uczen captained the defense with 28 digs.

After fighting their way to a 2-1 lead, the Eagles let the Pioneers (10-16) back in it after losing the fourth set. All tied up at 2 set apiece, the Eagles sprinted out to a 6-1 lead and never trailed in winning a decisive fifth set where they hit .353.

It was a different story to start the match as the Eagles hit -.086 in a 25-17 first set loss. The offense woke up and posted a .196 and .226 hitting percentage, respectively, to take the next two sets and establish the 2-1 lead. A pivotal second set victory, which featured a match-high nine ties and four lead changes, was finished off by back-to-back-to-back kills by Doherty, Renee Meister, and Mackenzie Hannan after the Eagles faced a 23-22 deficit.

The Eagles were outhit .153 to .130 on the match and won their first match when hitting under .145 this season. They were previously 0-11 when hitting below .145.

Dana Voltolina led the Pioneers with 15 kills and Emma Przeslicke added a match-high 35 assists.

Next up for the Eagles is their toughest challenge yet when they host No. 7 UW-Whitewater at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night.
