AURORA, Ill. – Despite holding undefeated Aurora to a .131 hitting percentage, the Edgewood College volleyball team were haunted by a flurry of late errors in all three sets of a 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-21) defeat on Friday night.
Renee Meister and
Erika Van Engen paced the offense with eight kills apiece,
Haley Schwenn added 20 assists, and
Sarah Uczen carved up 12 digs as the Eagles (10-12, 5-2 NACC) stayed in it with some stout defense that forced Aurora into 20 errors on the night. Too many late errors prevented the Eagles from handing the Spartans, who are one of only two undefeated teams in conference play, their first NACC loss.
Both teams hit under .068 in a first set that came down to the wire. All tied up at 24, Aurora (18-5, 7-0 NACC) took advantage of two straight Eagle attack errors to win set one.
Both offenses came alive in the ensuing set, but another pair of attack errors by the Eagles and a kill by last season's NACC Player of the Year, Katie Vondra, wrapped up a second set victory by the Spartans, 25-20.
It was much of the same in the final set as the Spartans broke a 21-21 tie with four straight points off a trio of Eagle errors and another Vondra kill.
Aurora's Katie Vondra posted 11 kills to lead an offense that was limited to a .131 hitting percentage, their lowest in conference play. The Eagles countered with a .108 hitting percentage and have lost every match this season when hitting under .180.
The Eagles face Benedictine (4-17, 3-4 NACC) on Saturday, October 14 at noon.
