Eagles can't hold off Regents in second half

MADISON, Wis. – For 20 minutes on Saturday afternoon, the Edgewood College women's basketball team played their best half of the season. However, an eight-point halftime lead turned into an eight-point loss in a 63-55 setback to Rockford University. The Eagles were denied their first win of the season.

Edgewood College (0-13, 0-8 NACC) took an 8-5 lead on a three-point basket by Cali Twet and would hold that lead all the way into the fourth quarter. Sidney Peach and Taylor Hilliard also hit three-point baskets in the first quarter for a 20-18 lead.

In the second quarter, Edgewood College opened their largest lead of the game and the season at 33-23 after a jump shot by Aleigha Sigafus. Rockford University (5-8, 3-5 NACC) cut the margin to six points, but a three-point play by Marissa Hoyer, followed by a basket and another three-point play by Morgan Michaels gave the Eagles a 41-33 halftime advantage. Edgewood College shot a season-high 51.6 percent in the first half, including 4-for-8 from the three-point line.

However, the good shooting wouldn't continue in the second half. The Eagles went just 1-for-11 in the third period, but still held a 47-44 lead. The Regents finally broke through on a free throw by Taylor May with 7:55 remaining, giving Rockford their first lead in over 27 minutes of playing time. Edgewood College got a basket from Allison Gordon to keep the Eagles with two points at 53-51, but Rockford converted six out of 12 free throws down the stretch to escape the Edgedome with a win.

Marissa Hoyer led the Eagles with 12 points and nine rebounds, while MacKenzie Meyers collected a career-high 14 rebounds to go with nine points. Meyers also dished out a team-high four assists. Peach hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with eight points. After shooting 51.6 percent in the first half, Edgewood College finished the game at 34.9 percent shooting.

Rockford's Mallorie Getzelman led all scorers with 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. May also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Rockford shot 36.2 percent from the field but held a commanding 17-6 advantage at the free throw line.
