FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Seeking their first win of the season, the Edgewood College women's basketball team came up short in the final two minutes in defeat to Marian, 55-48, despite a combined 26 points and 15 rebounds from junior Marissa Hoyer and sophomore Allison Gordon.
It was a tight game from the outset and neither team led by more than six points until Marian (3-10, 2-6 NACC) turned a two-point lead at the 1:41 mark into a 53-46 advantage with 30 seconds to go. An ensuing layup by freshman Morgan Michaels concluded the scoring for the Eagles (0-14, 0-9 NACC) in their second-straight loss by single digits.
Hoyer finished with 15 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-14 shooting while Gordon added 11 points, eight boards, and three steals on a 5-for-10 performance from the field. The duo combined for 15 points in the first half as the Eagles led for all but 20 seconds en route to a 24-22 edge at the break.
Turnovers plagued both offenses in a hard fought game that saw both teams shoot below 34.5 percent. The Eagles gave it away 21 times and Marian finished with 16 turnovers.
The Eagles dropped to 37-22 all-time against Marian and lost for just the third time in the last 19 meetings. Both teams will face off again in the Edgedome on Tuesday, February 7.
Next up for the Eagles is their second matchup this season with Alverno in the Edgedome this Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m. The Inferno beat the Eagles, 82-51, at home on New Year's Eve.
