Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Eagles split pair of five-set matches

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team worked deep into the evening, but rewarded the fans in the Edgedome with a 3-2 victory over Wheaton College in the final match of the Edgewood College Triangular. Earlier in the day, the Eagles couldn't hang on to a 2-1 lead against UW-Oshkosh, eventually falling in five sets.

Against Wheaton College (1-5) the Eagles bounced back after falling behind with a 25-20 loss in the opening set. Emily Chaussee carried the Eagles in the second set scoring six kills and recording seven digs as Edgewood College (3-3) evened the match with a 25-23 win. The Eagles thoroughly dominated the third set, hitting .424 to win 25-9 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Wheaton forced a fifth set with a tight 27-25 win in the fourth, but the Thunder had no answer for Renee Meister in the fifth. Meister was a perfect 6-for-6 on attacks in the decisive set. Savannah Koester closed out the match with a solo block on Wheaton's Megan Lacey.

Three different Eagles had at least 14 kills in the match, led by Meister's 16 kills. Chaussee and Elizabeth Evans added 14 kills apiece, while Chaussee completed a double-double with 18 digs. Jenna Dammen led the team in hitting percentage with eight kills and just one error in 13 attempts for a .538 percentage. Nichole Schaeve had four service aces and a team-high 23 digs. Setters Haley Schwenn and Alex Zapuchlak combined for 56 assists, with Schwenn scoring 34 of them and Zapuchlak the other 22.

In the earlier match, the Eagles suffered a carbon copy of last season's meeting with UW-Oshkosh (4-2) at the Edgedome, as the Titans came from behind for a 3-2 victory. This time, the Eagles went ahead 2-1 on the strength of Chaussee in the first set and Koester in the third set. Chaussee had six kills in the opening set, while Koester matched her with six kills and added a block in the third set. However, the Titans evened the match with a 25-19 win the fourth set and dominated the fifth set 15-6.

Chaussee led the Eagles with 14 kills and 12 digs in the match. Koester had 12 kills and Evans notched a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 13 digs. Schaeve had a team-high 14 digs against the Titans, while Zapuchlak recorded 21 assists.

Edgewood College will venture Saturday to the UW-Platteville Invitational where they will take on Carleton College and Buena Vista University. Next week, the Eagles return home for their NACC opener against Marian University.
