Van Engen posts career-high kill total in win

MADISON, Wis. – A slow start for the Edgewood College team could have been trouble, but the Eagles turned their match against Alverno College around in a hurry. After losing the first set, Edgewood College didn't let the Inferno score more than 12 points in any set, taking a 22-25, 25-12, 25-11, 25-9 victory at the Edgedome.

Alverno College (3-17, 1-3 NACC) hit .400 in the first set to take their first set off the Eagles since 2008. From there on however, it was all Edgewood College (8-9, 3-1 NACC). The Eagles scored the first five points of the second set and eventually took a 17-11 lead. From there Edgewood College scored eight of the next nine points, finishing the set with a block by Savannah Koester and Aga Sron. Koester had two kills and two aces in the second set.

The Eagles took command of the third set, going on a 15-1 run to take a commanding 22-9 lead. Jenna Dammen had two kills and a block during the run. Koester added five kills in seven attacks without an error in the set.

Edgewood College finished off the match by opening the fourth set with a 19-3 run. Grace Zimmer served 10 straight points for the Eagles, including two service aces. Erika Van Engen had a huge fourth set, scoring eight kills in 12 attempts. Sron had two solo blocks and two assisted blocks.

Koester led the Eagles with 11 kills and a .444 attack percentage. Van Engen, made sure she had a happy birthday with a career-high 10 kills. Elizabeth Evans and Dammen had five kills apiece. Sron finished with a team-high six blocks and Nichole Scaheve led the Eagles with nine digs. Haley Schwenn finished with 15 assists.

Edgewood College will travel to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday for a pair of matches in the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. The Eagles will play Trinity University (Texas) at noon and then meet Alma College at 2:00 p.m.
