Eagles split again as Evans honored

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Evans was named to the Washington University St. Louis Baden Invitational all-tournament team and helped lead the Edgewood College volleyball team to another split on Saturday with a comeback win over Hanover (Ind.), 3-2, and a defeat to No. 6 Washington University, 3-0.

Evans, who earned her first career All-Tournament honor, posted her first double-double of the year with a game-high 15 kills and 10 digs as the Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Hanover (Ind.), 25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13, in their first five-set match of the season. After allowing the Panthers (1-2) to hit .483 and .341, respectively, in sets two and three, the Eagle defense buckled down and allowed a .162 and -.091 hit percentage in sets four and five.

The Eagles never trailed in the final two sets in their first meeting against Hanover.

Sophomore Emily Chaussee also added a double-double of her own with 12 kills and 18 digs, while junior Mackenzie Hannan and senior Jenna Dammen added to the defensive effort with a combined seven block assists.

It was tough going in their fourth and final game of the tournament against arguably their toughest opponent in school history, host No. 6 Washington University St. Louis. Thanks to three aces by Chaussee, the Eagles rattled off four straight points to start the match against the Bears (4-1), but ultimately fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17). Each set started out close, but the Bears eventually pulled away in all three set wins.

The Eagles were contained offensively, hitting just .026 compared to the Bears' .326 mark. Evans and Chaussee each posted nine kills while freshman Nicole Schaeve collected a team-high 11 digs.

The Eagles host UW-Oshkosh and Wheaton (Ill.) next Tuesday, September 6, in their season-opening triangular at home.
