Chaussee leads Eagles to third straight sweep

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team rolled to their third consecutive sweep and second consecutive victory to open NACC play in a 3-0 win over MSOE. The Eagles claimed the win 25-19, 25-22, 25-13 behind 11 kills from Emily Chaussee.

Edgewood College (6-4, 2-0 NACC) trailed in set one 16-15 before an 8-0 run put the Eagles ahead for good. Savannah Koester started and ended the decisive run with a kill and Jenna Dammen added a solo block. Koester put down another kill for the 24th point, and Chaussee put the Eagles ahead 1-0 with a kill on match point.

MSOE (0-7, 0-2 NACC) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set. However, Chaussee exerted her will to bring the Eagles back. The Eagles finally tied the set at 18-18 on an assisted block by Chaussee and Dammen and then took their first lead of the set on Chaussee's kill on the next point. The sophomore from Sun Prairie scored four of the Eagles' final eight points on kills and finished with six kills for the set. Renee Meister also had three of her team-high five blocks in the same set, including one solo effort.

The third set turned out to be no contest. The Eagles scored nine unanswered points to take a 14-3 lead and never looked back. Alex Zapuchlak scored two service aces during the run, and Koester hammered home three kills. The Eagles led 24-9 before a four-point run by the Raiders closed the margin.

Chaussee had 11 kills and hit .375 to lead the Edgewood College attack at the Kern Center. Koester finished with eight kills. Zapuchlak led the Eagles in three categories: assists (17), digs (13) and service aces (3). Haley Schwenn also had double digit assists with 10 and Nichole Schaeve added 12 digs.

MSOE received a team-high 10 kills from Hannah Pekarek and 11 digs from Sarabeth Haworth. The win for Edgewood College was their ninth straight over the Raiders and 11th in their last 12 meetings.

Edgewood College heads to a match on Saturday with regional implications. The Eagles will face 16th-ranked UW-Whitewater on the road, beginning at 12:00 p.m. The Eagles and Warhawks have split their last four meetings 2-2, with UW-Whitewater being ranked each time.
