#16 Warhawks pay back Eagles with sweep

WHITEWATER Wis. – On Saturday at Russell Arena, the Edgewood College women's volleyball team couldn't recapture the magic of last season's sweep of ranked UW-Whitewater. This time around the 16th-ranked Warhawks turned in a 3-0 victory over the Eagles. Edgewood College fell to 6-5 on the year and had their three-match winning streak snapped.

Despite the sweep, all three sets were closely contested. In the opening set UW-Whitewater (8-3) never led by more the four points until taking a 24-19 lead right at the end of the set.

In the middle set, the Eagles battled back from a 19-16 deficit. Erika Van Engen and Savannah Koester scored back-to-back kills and then Van Engen served on a Warhawk attack error to tie the set at 20-20. The Eagles actually had a set point, serving at 24-23, but the Warhawks survived thanks to an Eagle service error. The Warhawks Courtney Wagner scored back-to-back kills to end the set and give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead.

UW-Whitewater scored the first four points of the third set, but Edgewood College (6-5) rallied back to take a 13-9 lead behind a pair of kills from Emily Chaussee. However, the Warhawks regained control of the set with a 10-2 run for a 19-15 lead. The Eagles got back as close at 19-18, but UWW scored five of the next six points to effectively seal the match.

Koester led the Eagles with eight kills and a team-high four service aces. Chaussee totaled seven kills and added nine digs, while Renee Meister had six kills. Nichole Schaeve led the Eagles with 13 digs and Alex Zapuchlak had 14 assists. The Eagles hit only .096 for the match.

Edgewood College will be off for most of next week until the NACC-IIAC Challenge which will be hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. The Eagles will face Loras College and the host Knights on Friday, before playing Buena Vista University and Coe College on Saturday.
