MADISON, Wis. - Edgewood College hit six three-pointers and overcame a shaky second period to pick up their second consecutive victory on Wednesday night at the Edgedome. The Eagles received career-high scoring totals from both Sierra Jiran and Allison Gordon in a 66-53 win over Marian University. Edgewood College improved to 4-11 overall and 3-7 in the NACC.
Edgewood College was lights out in the opening period, shooting 9-for-17 from the field and hitting four of seven three point attempts for a 24-11 lead. Kortni Kohl, Sydney Smith, Jazmin Little and Jiran all had a triple in the first quarter while Gordon tallied eight points. However, Marian University (4-10, 2-7 NACC) slowly climbed back into the game while the Eagles went cold in the second period. The Sabres' Nicole Paulus hit a pair of three-pointers, but Edgewood College still led 31-26 at the break.
Marian completed their comeback early in the third period, taking the lead 32-31 on another three-pointer by Paulus, but that would be the last lead the Sabres would enjoy. Jiran and Rachel Pope sparked an 8-0 Eagles run midway through the third period, that put Edgewood College ahead for good. The Sabres trimmed the lead back to five points, but two free throws by Pope, a put-back from Cole Jordee and a buzzer-beating drive by Zoey Dougherty to end the third period gave the Eagles a 48-38 advantage.
Two Jiran free throws and an over the shoulder prayer to beat the shot clock by Kohl pushed the Eagles margin out to 14 points at 52-38. The Sabres got back within nine on a Jessica Roberts three-pointer with 3:53 to go, but would get no closer. Jordee made four free throws and Pope converted a three-point play down the stretch to secure the Eagles third NACC win of the season.
Jiran established a new career-high with 18 points, although she fell short of her third consecutive double-double with a team-high nine rebounds. Gordon battled through foul trouble to go 7-for-9 from the field and matched her career-high with 14 points. After averaging 3.9 points per game through her first 10 games, Gordon has averaged 12 points over her last four contests.
Little hit two big three-point shots to finish with eight points and three assists, while Jordee and Pope scored seven points apiece. Pope also posted a new career-high with seven assists. Edgewood College shot 41.8 percent from the field for the second straight game, matching their season best.
The Sabres' Paulus hit her first five three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 21 points. She was the only Marian player in double figures, as Brittany Bauman contributed seven points and a team-high nine rebounds. Marian committed 16 turnovers compared to a season-low 11 turnovers for the Eagles.
Head coach Casey Thousand will return to her alma mater for Edgewood College's next game. The Eagles get the weekend off before a Tuesday night date at Lakeland College. Tip-off for that game is 7:00 p.m.
