Eagles go 1-1 on final day of NACC-IIAC Challenge

MEQUON, Wis. – Edgewood College dropped the first game of the second day of the NACC-IIAC Challenge Saturday afternoon at the Buuck Fieldhouse but followed that up with an impressive win over Central College in four sets. In the morning the Eagles fell to Buena Vista University in five.

The Eagles and Beavers went back-and-forth in a wild contest in the morning, with Buena Vista eventually pulling out a 25-22, 25-27, 23-25, 25-16, 15-12 win. Elizabeth Evans' 13 kills and eight digs weren't enough against a Beavers team that hit .177 in the match.

Jordan Winkler and Renee Meister also reached double figures in kills with 10 apiece while Rachel Tesch totaled 22 digs. After dropping the first set, the Eagles battled back to a thrilling win in set two. The Eagles led 24-21 after a Buena Vista service ace but the Beavers rallied and scored four-straight to take the lead. An Emily Chaussee kill, a Beavers attack error and a Savannah Koester kill then gave Edgewood College the win in the set.

The Eagles had to fend off another Buena Vista run in set three. Edgewood College held a 15-5 lead after a 9-0 run. Chaussee had all three Eagles kills in the streak but the Beavers slowly chipped away and dropped the set by only two points.

The Beavers then closed things out in set four with help from a 6-0 run early on in the set. With the scored tied at 10 in set five, Buena Vista went on a 3-0 run before Jade Schaap recorded back-to-back kills to end it.

In Edgewood College's tournament finale, Central ran out to an 8-2 lead in the first set and the Eagles couldn't rebound from the slow start. The Eagles hit .353 in set two and led 11-5 early on before closing out the set by recording the last five points.

The Eagles kept things rolling offensively in set three with a 25-14 win. They hit .281 in the set and raced out to an 8-2 lead early on. Buena Vista would never get closer from there on out in the match.

Edgewood College then closed things out with a 25-20 win in set four. Chaussee finished with a career-high 16 kills while Winkler was right behind with nine and a .320 attack percentage. Tesch (18) and Alex Zapuchlak (15) led the Eagles in digs while Haley Schwenn dished out 18 assists.

The Eagles' next bit of action will be on Tuesday, Sept. 29 when they square off against non-conference foe Carroll University. The match will take place at 7 pm from the Van Male Field House in Waukesha, Wis.
