MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College volleyball team got better as the night went on Thursday night, starting off slow in the first set but rebounding to put together another dominating conference win. The Eagles won in straight sets 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 on a night where Rachel Tesch became the fourth player in school history with 1,500 career digs.
It appeared as though the Eagles' three-game win streak might come to an end early on, as the Raiders came out and were up 7-2 in the first set and eventually 11-6. Two straight kills thanks to Savannah Koester and Emily Chaussee and a Jordan Winkler ace brought the Eagles within two at 11-9.
The Eagles would score four-straight points on two separate occasions in the remainder of the first set, with the second putting them up 19-15. The Raiders crawled back to make it 20-18 but the Eagles would then score five of the last six points to put things away.
The Eagles rebounded from a .062 attack percentage in the first set to turn in a mark of .333 in the second. A Winkler kill put the Eagles up 10-2 early on but the Raiders stuck with it and eventually clawed back to 16-13. Koester would step up on offense, generating the final three kills for the Eagles in the match while finishing with four in the set.
Everything was clicking in the third and final set for head coach Paul Schlomer's Eagles. The Eagles led 6-5 before going on a 12-2 run to go up 18-7. Seven different Eagles recorded kills in the set, while Renee Meister led the team with three. The Eagles were nearly perfect on offense, generating 12 kills and no errors on 19 attempts for a hitting percentage of .632.
Evans had another career night with 10 kills and just one error on 15 attempts for a .600 attack percentage. Koester (8) and Chaussee (6) finished 2-3 for the Eagles in kills and both hit at least .333.
Haley Schwenn carded 14 assists while Alex Zapuchlak was right behind with 12. Tesch's 10 digs led the team and she joins Suann Saltzberry (Adler) (1,897), Kim Lueck (1,594) and Sam Himmelspach (1,569) as the only players in school history to reach 1,500 digs.
The Eagles will be off Friday before returning to the Edgedome on Saturday, Sept. 19 for a triangular. They will play No. 17 UW-Whitewater at noon and will wrap up the day with a 4 pm match against Lawrence University.
