FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Edgewood College opened NACC play with an impressive performance against the Marian University Sabres Tuesday night at Sadoff Gymnasium, winning in straight sets 25-20, 28-26, 25-15. Savannah Koester led the Eagles offensively with 12 kills while three Eagles posted double-digit dig totals.
The Eagles started a bit slow and were down 4-1 in the first set before settling into a groove. The set was back-and-forth but the Sabres went on a run to make it 20-19 in their favor. Senior outside hitter Jordan Winkler then came to the rescue and recorded three straight kills to force a Marian timeout and to give the Eagles a 22-20 advantage.
Two Marian attacking errors and a kill by junior middle hitter Jenna Dammen gave the Eagles the win in the opening set 25-20.
Edgewood College was up 21-16 in set two but couldn't close things out. Four-straight points from Marian made it 21-20. The two teams went back-and-forth and needed extra points before Renee Meister recorded a kill and Elizabeth Evans had a service ace to put things away 28-26.
The Eagles hit .180 in the second set and tallied 23 digs along with four blocks.
Edgewood College saved their best defensive effort for the final set, holding the Sabres to a .000 hitting percentage. The team also recorded their eighth, ninth and tenth blocks of the match in the set.
The Eagles scored the first four points of the third set and would lead 14-5 at one point. The Sabres stormed back to within four points at 16-12 before the Eagles put the game away with nine of the last 12 points.
Evans joined Koester in the double-digit kills club with 10 and a .226 hitting percentage while Koester led all attackers with a .321 percentage. Winkler led the way with 14 digs while Haley Schwenn had 30 assists on the night. Renee Meister also impressed with a team-high five blocks and six kills.
The Eagles will return home for another NACC contest on Thursday, Sept. 17 against the MSOE Raiders. Game time from the Todd Wehr Edgedome is set for 7 pm.
