Eagles slip to 16th after second round struggle

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – After a strong first day, the Edgewood College men's golf team ran into trouble on the second day of the Frank Wriggelsworth Blugold Invitational. The Eagles shot 316 on Sunday at Wild Ridge G.C., but managed just 328 on day two at the Eau Claire Country Club.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College turned up solidly in the middle of the pack after Sunday's first round. Zach Hentrich shot a 76 at Wild Ridge, while Nathan Gilbert turned a 78 to lead the Eagles on day one.
- Brooks Johnson was the most consistent Eagle shooting 82 in the first round and 83 in the second for a two day total of 165.
- Alex Wedige recovered nicely from a difficult Sunday round with a team-low of 79 on Monday morning. Wedige was the only Eagle in the lineup to improve his score on the second day.
- Kyle Bruce shot 80 on Sunday, but did not compete in the second day of the event. Rogan Murphy competed as an individual, shooting 85 and 83 for a two-day total of 168.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The field at the Frank Wriggelsworth Blugold Invitational is often filled with some of the top teams in the region and this year was no exception. St. Thomas entered as the 12th ranked team in the nation according to the GCAA Coaches Poll, while Bethel University and host UW-Eau Claire were receiving votes.
- The Eagles have had success at this event having finished second in 2013 and fourth in 2014.

FOR THE FOES
- UW-Eau Claire claimed the team title, coming from behind with a blistering 291 on the second day, to beat Augsburg College by three strokes.
- Bethel University's Alex Case was the individual champion with a three-over par score of 146.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College will likely meet many of their NACC rivals at the Wisconsin Lutheran College Fall Invitational on September 20-21. The Warriors will host their event at the Washington County G.C. in Hartford, Wis.
